City Girl

Recently I went on a vacation to LA to visit my mother for the past couple of weeks. Although LA is the place where I want to live in the future, I’ve still missed New York a lot after I’ve been away for so long. Home sweet home 🙂

I’ve been very fortunate to be raised in Hong Kong and currently calling New York my home. Almost all my life, I have been living in the city either HK, NYC or LA ( except that 4 rough years in boarding high school in the middle of the mountains). I’m certainly a city girl, and I’m not good with nature. However, the older I get, the more I realize nature – like hiking on mountains – really helps me destress and appreciate what God has created for the world.

My fashion style has been influenced a lot by being in the City for almost 7 years. When I was living in LA and Hong Kong, I would incorporate a lot of colors into my outfits. However, being in the city for so long, the “All Black Fashion Trend” got into me slowly but surely. People say that New Yorkers always wear black because we are a fast paced city, and it’s easier to pick out outfits if it’s all the black ( which I think it’s totally valid ). Hope my outfit in this post isn’t too boring for you all but If you are ever in NYC I hope this gives you some inspiration xx

The other weekend in New York was slightly chilly and rainy and I was going out to eat and just wanted to be comfy but still look presentable so I decided to share with you guys how I did it! I am sure I’m not the only one to do this but sometimes I will go into Bobby’s closet and dig out whatever looks and feels the comfiest and call it MY outfit of the day. Well Bobby is 6’3″ and I’m 5’4″ so his sweaters mostly fit like dresses for me.. isn’t that kind of a trend now? At the end of the day, I look cuter with it on so that’s what matters most 😉 Just kidding ( Because Bobby is totally reading this).

I find the “boyfriend sweater” style super time efficient when I get ready. I usually pull out this look when I know I don’t have enough time to get ready. Here’s the equation to it: Sweater (make sure it’s big enough but not like homeless kinda baggy) + shorts (basically just to cover your ass ) + heels ( just because I’m a shorty)

I’ve been trying to find a good quality and affordable leather backpack. I know that this is a fad and didn’t want to splurge on a very nice one… plus I don’t see myself as a backpack girl anyway. I was stumbling around Instagram and found Camelia – their bags are all made in Rome with Italian leather. Their craftsmanship is top notch and yet the prices are reasonable. I’m totally in love with my backpack and have been using it everyday. This has replaced my workout bag, because this looks super cute with my workout outfits and its so convenient when I’m carrying other things.

Oh! And these boots are from Tony Bianco- Australia. I didn’t realized there are so many up and coming designers in Australia! I love their Diddy Boots I actually got two pairs in different colors 😉 Heads up: they fit 1/2 size smaller than your normal shoe size

Can you believe that I just started wearing jeans in the past year? I know, it is pretty crazy but most of my pants are either leather (that’s where a leatherista comes from!) or cloth. If I do wear denim I’m usually a shorts kind of girl. Especially in this hot and humid NYC and Hong Kong weather, my legs seriously need some breeze. Anyway since I recently started wearing jeans I wanted to see what is cool out there. My first pair was actually the ones with embroidery from Abercrombie & Fitch. Then I started expanding my jean collection to some wicked designs like these from Made Gold.

I’ve seen these worn from Bella to Romee (Victoria Secret model). They are often my inspiration for fashion trends. These pants stand out so much that I had to order them for myself! I’m glad that there are holes for my legs to breathe 😉 These pants have became one of my go to cool jeans now 🙂

Do you have any recommendations for jeans? I definitely should expand my wardrobe. Although it’s already been super packed and I often have to do seasonal cleaning 😉 (every season is spring cleaning season in this house is what Bobby says).

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope you all had a nice little vacay 🙂 Bobby and I decided to stay in New York for the holiday because we will be heading to Los Angeles next month. Also – it has been rainy/cloudy here all weekend and I wanted to be able to lay on my couch in my PJ’s and munch on some snacks and watch TV   all weekend (shh don’t tell my trainer!).

By the way, how awkward is it to pose for photos in busy locations?! I still get shy because people always stop and wonder what you are doing or look and stare. I usually love to stay in the city on holidays and take my vacations on  non-holiday weekends.  It’s because the city gets super quiet, and we were able to walk through the streets to take cool photos for the blog without having people stop for us. Well, it’s usually not a big problem for me because I am just posing but Bobby is always dodging cars and waiting for people to get out of the frame so it was definitely easier for him to get the shots this time. So if you travel on off days or stay in big cities on three day weekends make sure you make the most of it and get some good pictures!

I wasn’t planning on doing a blog post, but found this really cool door in the Meatpacking District after having brunch at Catch. A little history for you who don’t live in New York- In the mid-18th century, the Meatpacking District was a residential and industrial area that produced heavy iron work. Fast forward to the early-19th century, the district was filled with slaughter houses, and this is where the name “Meatpacking District’ came from. When you walk around the area, there are still a lot of heavy iron work, which combined with large entrance ways that were created to help transport the meat, creates a very cool rustic atmosphere. Also – the Meatpacking District is well known for their cobblestone streets but I didn’t get a chance to take photos on them this time (but don’t worry I have some cobblestone shots coming up for you very soon!), I was too focused on this cool looking entrance way.

Whenever Bobby and I go out, we often get compliments (sometimes I can’t tell if they think it is silly or cool but I’ll take it as a compliment anyway!) on how we are matching. I decided to add a couple photos of him to my blog, and share with you guys how I help pick his outfits too 😉 He takes so long to get ready, and changes multiple times before he can pick the outfit – It’s like a mini fashion show for me. I swear he takes longer to get ready than me and his outfits are a lot more simple! I know he is reading this though so I will stop there before I lose my photographer.

I’m groot!

The other weekend I went down the the seaport district of NYC, it is a cool place to shoot because of the proximity to water and the cobble stone streets, they also don’t allow cars to drive on a lot of the roads so you can get some cool middle of the street pictures! I went to see a movie at this theater called iPic, I had never heard of it before that day but it has got to be one of the coolest/upscale theaters in the city. You get a little private area for you and your date and you can order from the restaurant with a waiter. (hint get the truffle fries and the pretzels!). The movie we saw was Guardians of the Galaxy, I don’t normally like space movies but this one was pretty funny and I LOVE baby groot! He has some sweet dance moves and I find myself replying to people saying “I am groot” (ok the people are really only Bobby and he is starting to get pretty annoyed with it but I think it is funny, shhhh 😉 )

As you all know, black is my favorite color and wearing all black is an everyday thing for me. I mean New Yorkers have this thing for all black, it isn’t uncommon to see someone in the middle of summer wearing all black, maybe that’s why I felt so at home when I first moved here! (If you think I am bad, you should see Bobby’s closet). So you can imagine when I got my first Marias bag I had a big “what do I wear with this” moment.

If you wear all black your outfits always match and I now found myself trying to plan a cool outfit with colors I don’t normally use. I wanted to keep the colors muted and not wear a loud pair of pants or shirt/jacket so I could let my bag do the talking but I also needed my outfit to match my Marias bag. I found my inspiration at Gucci! (I know, who can’t find inspiration at Gucci, right??). They totally brought back the whole patches/embroidery trend recently and I wanted to recreate it.

I got these jeans from Abercrombie (yes, I still shop there sometimes and yes, you can still find some cool – cheap- high quality – stuff!), and the embroidery adds a bunch of colors to the outfit that brings it together with my bag yet still keeps the classic jeans look. I paired it with a plain white tank, a nude colored leather motto jacket, and a pair of heals that borrowed the nude from the jacket and a splash of color to match the bag/patches. As you guys know I have quite a bit of bags in my closet but none of them offer a connection with the women who weave the textiles that go into making the bags. The weaving is like a morse code that tells the story behind the individual weaver. The bags are all one of a kind so no one will be able to jack your style!

As a disclaimer I work for Marias but I wouldn’t work for a product I didn’t believe in, so go check out the website and let me know what you think!

Sweat

Back when I was a teenager, I used to play different sports and was very active throughout the years in middle and high school. When I moved to New York for college, I never really went to the gym or played any sports. (Unless you consider clubbing a sport, in that case I would be an Olympian!). It is very different here than in L.A. where you are a short drive from nature and (clean) beaches, in NYC you don’t typically have a car, the beaches are pretty dirty (unless you want to be stuck in a car for hours going up to the Hamptons).

However, recently came to the realization that if I didn’t work out I couldn’t keep eating massive amount of snacks (if you ask Bobby he would tell you that there is no meals or breakfast, lunch and dinner, just constant munching throughout the day!). If you know me well, I can surprisingly eat a lot. My schedule used to be wake up, munch, lunch, munch, dinner, dessert, and munch if I’m still up at night. It was constantly chewing on chocolate, chips or gummy candy in between meals. So because I LOVE to munch on snacks, I really needed to start going to the gym so I can still keep my petite figure. I got into the gym and realized I didn’t know the best way to workout besides run so I decided to hire a personal trainer. Thankfully he not only taught me a lot about nutrients and a proper diet but also some gym workouts which were customized to my body structure. When I’m traveling, he offers online training and nutrient/diet guidance. I told him I need a “coachella body” and he created a 4-week workout plan which was designed to meet my goals within a short time period. If you’d like a consultation with him, please email him: atlas.fathalla@gmail.com. FYI I still munch all the time but I mostly munch on protein bars and fruit salads (with some sea salt dark chocolate occasionally thrown in, shhhh)

Anyway, when I started working out I ran into a problem: don’t you hate that your make up melts and smudges during your workout? I do! I am sure some of you are reading this and saying duh don’t work out with makeup on! But, I have to say, in New York I am typically in a rush and for New Yorkers, brunch is our favorite hobby and I typically find myself going out to a workout class and then stopping by brunch or some errands on the way home and I really don’t like to bring makeup or a bag with me. I find it rather hard to have a good sweaty session, AND still look pretty with make up. I’ve tried different make up powder and foundation, but none of them stay on my face after I start sweating or they smudge making me look like a melting wax figure. Then I found out about Sweat Cosmetics, they offer sweat resistant foundation powder and highlighter, which sets thinly and evenly on my skin. The make up does not melt, nor does it smudge. It lasts for my whole workout session and I manage to still look presentable after. The best thing is that Sweat Cosmetics uses all natural ingredients, making it hypoallergenic for my sensitive skin. It comes in a little tube that rolls out as a brush, super easy to store in my gym bag and bring it everywhere for touch up. Thanks Sweats Cosmetics for fixing my sweaty problems 🙂

Raindrops, Crop Top

Have you guys ever seen any of the Underworld movies? I didn’t know what it was but Bobby forced me to watch it and I loved the way Kate Beckinsale dressed in it! (literally the only thing I remember about the movie haha) She wore these long black trench coats and the whole vibe seemed very New York and totally cool. Unfortunately, it was something most people would only wear on a Halloween type outing (I mean seriously when else could you wear a full leather outfit with a black trench coat, right??) so I decided to share with you guys how I would try and pull it off in a normal setting! (Well, NY normal, we love our black clothing)

I figured it would look best as more of a sporty outfit and a long coat like this calf hair trench is a great way to wear a crop-top outside of the gym when you would normally feel a bit naked (especially on the streets of New York!) I especially like it because you can quickly cover up when you walk past the creepy guys on the street. The leather joggers are a great way to dress up the crop top and dress down the coat which brings the whole outfit together, especially when you pair it with a pair of cool black booties like these Charlotte Olympia. I think one of the important aspects is if you are wearing leather, try not to have more than one piece have the same color or texture, in this outfit the jacket is mostly pony hair, the pants are leather and the boots are suede, but they still go together even though the are all black they are different enough that you don’t look like you are wearing a suit haha.

Lastly, I am so happy I got the chance to shoot with this Alexander McQueen umbrella! I’ve had my eye on it for a while. Bobby got it for me for Christmas but I have a habit of leaving my umbrella places so I was scared to use it for the first couple of months until I realized I would never let it out of my sight let alone leave it somewhere haha.
